Tesla unveiled its highly anticipated robotaxi, the Cybercab, during an event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. CEO Elon Musk introduced the fully autonomous vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals, and is expected to enter production in 2026 at a price under $30,000.
The Cybercab is central to Tesla’s self-driving strategy as competition intensifies from traditional automakers and Chinese companies. However, Musk did not provide a timeline for regulatory approval needed for public road use.
Musk described the Cybercab as a “comfortable lounge” on wheels, where passengers can relax until reaching their destination. The event also featured a robot bus concept, but no details on its production were given.
While Tesla has long aimed to lead in autonomous driving, it currently lags behind companies like Waymo, which operates fully autonomous services in major U.S. cities. Tesla’s vehicles, including the Model 3 and Model Y, feature driver-assistance systems, but still require human oversight.
Musk’s announcement comes after delays and follows the cancellation of a lower-cost Tesla model earlier this year. Despite the Cybercab’s sleek design, analysts like Gene Munster have expressed skepticism over the extended timeline for full autonomy.
